Engineering leadership when you need it.
Some engineering challenges need more than advice. Others need a clear direction before committing people and resources.
I offer three ways to work together, depending on the problem and how involved you need me to be.
Engineering Delivery Reset
When an important initiative is stuck or repeatedly missing commitments.
I'll work with your team to understand why progress has slowed and what needs to change.
That might mean examining how work is planned, how technical dependencies are handled, where decisions are getting delayed, or whether the team has taken on more than it can realistically deliver.
We'll identify the most important issue and work on a practical improvement, rather than producing a long list of recommendations.
We'll agree on the timing and scope based on the situation, with an emphasis on understanding what's wrong, making a useful improvement, and setting priorities for what comes next.
Engineering Execution & Scale-Up
When you need someone experienced to help lead a critical initiative.
Your engineering leaders have a lot on their plates, and an important piece of work needs dedicated attention.
I can step in to lead a defined initiative, working with your engineers, product leaders, and other stakeholders.
That could include:
- Leading a product or platform initiative through delivery
- Working through technical decisions and dependencies
- Coordinating execution across teams
- Helping a growing engineering organization maintain effective delivery
We'll agree on responsibilities, decision authority, and expected outcomes before starting.
We'll agree on the level of involvement needed for the initiative and revisit it together as the work evolves.
Engineering Execution Strategy
When important engineering decisions need a clear direction.
If delivery is unpredictable, your organization is struggling to scale, or a technical choice has competing risks, I'll help you work through the options.
We'll work through the technical and organizational tradeoffs, identify the decisions that matter most, and determine what your team should tackle first.
You'll have clear options, explicit tradeoffs, recommended priorities, and a practical execution plan to guide your team's next steps.
We'll agree on the scope and timing based on the decisions you need to make.
Working together
We start with a conversation about what you're trying to accomplish, what's making it difficult, and what progress would look like.
I'll tell you whether I think I can help. If there's a fit, I'll propose a first engagement with a clear scope, responsibilities, deliverables, and timing.
If the problem isn't clear yet, we can start with a focused assessment. I'd speak with the people involved, look at the relevant technical and delivery work, and give you a short written summary of the main constraints and what I'd recommend doing first.
You can use that with your team or discuss a separate engagement to help put it into practice. There's no obligation to continue. If the work is already clear, we can scope it directly.
I'm based in Austin, Texas, and work remotely, with on-site sessions when useful.
